Becoming a Nurse in the United Kingdom

I’ve had multiple American nurses ask me about working abroad.  I recently had the opportunity to connect with Brit from the UK who gave me the run-down about the process since I am clueless about this!  I thought it would be beneficial to share with you guys!

Why the UK?

There’s one very important reason why the UK supersedes anything else – namely, the National Health Service (NHS).

The NHS is one of, if not the, greatest health services in the world. This prestigious institution can offer you the best in choice when it comes to roles and personal development. Plus, by having this experience on your CV you open more doors for your future.

What you Need to Do

In order to qualify to work in the UK as a nurse you need to:

  • Apply for and receive citizenship, which you can find out more about here.
  • Pass the English Language Testing System (IETLS), even if English is your first language.
  • Be assessed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), which involves a multiple choice exam you take in your native country and a practical exam (OSCE) conducted in the UK.

With the right skills already in place, or if you’ve had a number of years’ experience already, the above assessments should be relatively straightforward. All that’s left for you to do now is to find work, but luckily there are a number of NHS approved agencies who can help you get the role you want.

So be sure to follow these steps and gain yourself a place in one the world’s finest medical establishments.
